Food — Grade 1 Vocabulary

The Grade 1 Food topic pack expands food vocabulary to include 25-30 words with more spelling complexity: vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus), fruits (strawberry, watermelon, pineapple), proteins (salmon, yogurt, cheese), and prepared foods (spaghetti, tortilla, lasagna). These words span multiple languages of origin: spaghetti (Italian), tortilla (Spanish), broccoli (Italian). Grade 1 food vocabulary connects to health education (food groups, MyPlate), science (plant parts we eat), and reading informational texts about nutrition and cooking. Spelling challenges include double letters (broccoli), accent-influenced pronunciations (tortilla), and long compound words (strawberry, watermelon).

Why This Pack Works for Grade 1

First graders (ages 6-7) experience the biggest leap in reading ability. By year end, most students progress from reading simple sentences to reading short chapter books independently. Key milestones: mastering Dolch Grade 1 and Fry 1-100 word lists (~100 new sight words), learning consonant blends (bl, cr, st), digraphs (sh, ch, th), and common word families (-at, -ig, -ot, -ug). Spelling becomes formal — students are expected to spell 3-5 letter CVC and CCVC words correctly. Sentence construction begins: students learn to write complete sentences with capital letters and periods. Vocabulary grows to 2,000-3,000 words by year end.
