Readability and syllable tools for writers

What Is Kindergarten Reading Level?

Paste a text to see whether its level fits kindergarten, or another early grade.

What is kindergarten reading level? It is grade 0 on the Flesch-Kincaid scale, and this checker estimates how close a short text comes to it. Paste your text into the box, keep the target on Kindergarten, and the tool shows a grade and a verdict on whether the text fits. It runs in the browser, is free, and needs no sign-up or account. Kindergarten is grade 0 in the formulas, and the result is presented as a U.S. grade level. The tool measures sentence length and word length only, so it gives an estimate. It does not say what a child should read. Use it to compare short passages, check early-reader text, or see how a change to a sentence moves the score.

How to use the Kindergarten reading level checker

  1. Open the Text to check box. To try a sample first, click the chip Easy sample, Beginner text or Medium sample.
  2. Clear the box if needed, then paste or type your text.
  3. If your text is early-reader lines with no end punctuation, turn on Treat each line as a sentence. Leave it off for normal writing.
  4. Keep Target grade on Kindergarten, the default, or choose Grade 1 to Grade 5.
  5. Read the big Flesch-Kincaid grade number and the Against the target verdict.
  6. Check Average words per sentence and Average syllables per word to see what is pushing the score up or down.
  7. Scroll to the Sentence by sentence table to see the words and syllables in each sentence. Read any warning shown above the results.

The chips load ready-made texts, so you can see how the results change before you paste your own. Everything happens in your browser, and the text you paste is not sent anywhere. Use Copy result to copy the numbers as text, Copy link to copy a web address that reopens the tool with your settings, and Print / save as PDF to keep a record. Reset returns the tool to its starting sample. A very long pasted text is left out of the copied link.

What is a kindergarten reading level?

A kindergarten reading level is grade 0 on the Flesch-Kincaid scale used by this tool. Texts at this level have very short sentences and mostly one-syllable words, which pushes the formula result to about 1 or below.

In this scale, kindergarten is grade 0 and first grade is grade 1. The formula was published by Kincaid and colleagues in 1975 as Navy Research Branch Report 8-75.

How do I check if my text suits kindergarten?

Paste the text into Text to check, keep Target grade on Kindergarten, and read the verdict. The verdict uses this tool’s own rule, not a published one. A grade up to 0.5 above the target gives “Fits the target”. A grade up to 1.5 above gives “A little above the target”. Anything higher gives “Above the target”.

Syllable counts are estimates. The tool uses a dictionary count where a word is listed and a rule-based estimate otherwise. For example, “A beautiful day.” has 5 syllables in 3 words, which is 1.67 syllables per word.

Can the grade be negative?

Yes. Very simple text can score below zero. The beginner text “I see a big red bus. The bus can go fast.” has 11 words, 2 sentences and 11 syllables. Using the formula, 0.39 × (11 ÷ 2) + 11.8 × (11 ÷ 11) − 15.59 = −1.6. Read a negative grade as kindergarten or below.

Should each line be a sentence?

Only for early-reader text where lines have no end punctuation. In that case, turn on Treat each line as a sentence. Otherwise, a single line break counts as a space, and a blank line counts as a paragraph break.

What are the verdict limits for each target grade?

The limits are always the target grade plus 0.5 and plus 1.5. For Kindergarten (grade 0), a result up to 0.5 fits, up to 1.5 is a little above, and anything higher is above. For Grade 1 the limits are 1.5 and 2.5, for Grade 2 they are 2.5 and 3.5, and so on up to Grade 5, where they are 5.5 and 6.5. They are this tool’s own rule, so use them only to compare passages with each other.

What about higher grades?

Choose Grade 1 to Grade 5 in Target grade. The verdict is then judged against that grade, using the same three verdict labels. The grade result itself does not change with the target.

Frequently asked questions

What reading level is kindergarten?

Kindergarten is grade 0 in the formulas, and its children are usually aged 5 to 6. In the US convention, grade n covers ages n+5 to n+6.

Why does a very easy text show a negative grade?

The formula subtracts 15.59, so a text of very short sentences made of one-syllable words lands below zero. The tool shows the computed number and reads it as kindergarten level or below.

Is this what a child should read?

No. The tool measures sentence length and word or syllable length only. It cannot judge meaning, topic, pictures, decodability or a child’s skill. Teachers decide what a child reads.

Are the syllable counts exact?

No, they are estimates. A dictionary count is used where the word is listed, and a rule is used otherwise. Numbers count as 1 syllable, so the final grade is an estimate too.

Is my text uploaded or stored?

No. The tool runs in your browser, and the text you paste is not uploaded or stored by the site.

Can I share or print my result?

Copy result copies the numbers as text, Copy link copies a web address that reopens the tool with your settings, and Print / save as PDF opens your browser’s print dialog. A very long pasted text is left out of the link.
