What Grade Is a 7 Year Old In?

Enter an age or a birth date to see the US school grade for this school year and the next.

This tool shows what grade a 7 year old is in, using either an age in years or a birth date. Enter the age and it shows the grade for the school year, the grade for the next school year, and the typical ages in that grade. It runs in your browser. Results follow the kindergarten cutoff rule, so the same birthday can lead to a different grade in different states. For a specific child, use the birth date option, because the cutoff date decides the grade. The table below the result gives the grade level by age for ages 4 to 18.

How to use the grade finder

Start by choosing one of the two modes under I know the child’s: Age or Birth date.

  1. For age mode, select Age (in years) and type the age. The default is 7. Enter a whole number from 0 to 30.
  2. For birth date mode, select Birth date and type the date as YYYY-MM-DD.
  3. In birth date mode, set School year starts in (year). The default is 2026.
  4. Open the Kindergarten cutoff rule list and pick a state, or choose My own date (below).
  5. If you chose your own date, type the Cutoff date (MM-DD). The default is 09-01.
  6. Read the results. Age mode shows the grade, what happens if the birthday comes later, the next school year, and the typical ages in that grade. Birth date mode also shows the age on the cutoff date, the cutoff used, and the kindergarten year.
  7. Open the collapsible state cutoff table to compare states, or scroll to the age-to-grade table for ages 4 to 18.

The five presets (5 year old, 7 year old, 12 year old, Born Sept 2 Texas, and Born Sept 2 Colorado) fill in the fields for you, so you can check a few examples quickly. If you see an error, check that the age is a whole number from 0 to 30, that the date is valid, that the school year is between 1950 and 2100, and that the child was not born after the cutoff for that school year.

What grade is a 7 year old in?

A 7 year old is usually in 2nd grade, if the child is 7 on the cutoff date for that school year. If the birthday falls later in the school year, the child is 6 at the start and is in 1st grade.

The rule is simple. A child starts kindergarten in the school year when they are 5 on or before the cutoff date. Each grade after that is one year older, so grade = age on the cutoff date minus 5. Kindergarten is 5, 1st grade is 6, 2nd grade is 7, and grade 12 is 17. Age 4 is Pre-K, and age 18 or more is past grade 12. Under this rule, a 6 year old is usually in 1st grade, an 8 year old in 3rd grade, and a 9 year old in 4th grade. During the school year, grade 2 covers ages 7 to 8, because the child turns 8 part way through.

What is the kindergarten cutoff date?

The kindergarten cutoff date is the date by which a child must turn 5 to start kindergarten in that school year. A birthday exactly on the cutoff counts. Each state sets its own date, and the NCES table in the 2020 snapshot shows most states with one date, from 7/31 to 10/15, plus Connecticut at 1/1. September 1 is the most common date, used by 20 of the 51 rows (50 states and DC). Seven rows have no single date: Massachusetts sets it district by district, New Hampshire does not specify one, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania leave it to local choice, and Vermont lists “5” with no date. Missouri metropolitan districts may choose a date from August 1 to October 1.

Here is how the cutoff changes the grade. A child born on 2019-09-02 is in 1st grade in the 2026-27 school year under Texas’s September 1 cutoff, with kindergarten in 2025-26. Under Colorado’s October 1 cutoff, the same child is in 2nd grade, with kindergarten in 2024-25. If a state has no statewide date, the tool uses the cutoff you type and shows a warning.

The age-to-grade steps are this page’s rule of thumb (grade = age on the cutoff date minus 5), not a rule from that table.

Frequently asked questions

What grade is my child in by birth date?

Choose Birth date mode, enter the birth date as YYYY-MM-DD, then set the school year and the cutoff rule. The grade shown is for that school year, based on the age on the cutoff date rather than the age today.

What age do kids start kindergarten?

Most children start kindergarten in the school year when they turn 5 on or before the cutoff date. The cutoff differs by state, so the same child can start kindergarten a year earlier in one state than in another (see the Texas and Colorado example above).

Is it the same in every state?

No. The 2020 NCES table lists cutoff dates from 7/31 to 10/15, plus Connecticut’s 1/1, and some states have no single date. Check the current rule with your child’s school district, because laws change.

What if my child was held back or skipped a grade?

The grade shown is a usual placement based on age, not a measure of ability, and schools can place children differently. This tool does not cover holding back or skipping a grade, so the result may not match your child’s current grade. Ask the child’s school for the actual placement.

Is this the same as reading level?

No. Grade is school placement by age, while reading level measures how hard a text is to read. For reading level, see What is reading level.

Is the birth date stored?

No. The tool runs in your browser and does not send or save the birth date. The page address does update with your entries so you can copy the link, and that link contains the birth date, so share it with care.
